School holidays today: State-wise update as rain closes schools in select districts
School holiday update for July 29: State-wise status as rain disrupts classes in selected districts nationwide

No nationwide or statewide school holiday has been declared across India for today, July 29, 2026. Although Guru Purnima is being observed across the country, it is recognised as a restricted holiday, allowing local administrations and individual schools to decide whether educational institutions should remain open or closed. Most schools across the country are functioning as scheduled, with many organising Guru Purnima celebrations, prayer meetings and teacher appreciation programmes on campus. However, several district administrations have announced closures because of heavy monsoon rainfall, severe weather conditions and local events affecting public movement.Rain prompts closures in affected districtsHeavy to extremely heavy rainfall alerts issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) have resulted in school closures in selected districts. In Maharashtra, all schools, colleges, anganwadis and coaching institutions in Nagpur district remain closed after an IMD Red Alert warned of severe waterlogging and flash flood risks. In Uttarakhand, district administrations in Bageshwar, Champawat and Garhwal have declared a holiday for educational institutions. The decision follows persistent rainfall, increased landslide threats and disruptions to transport routes.Visakhapatnam schools shut for pilgrimage eventIn Andhra Pradesh, schools remain open across the state except in Visakhapatnam, where 221 schools and colleges located along the 32-kilometre Simhachalam Giripradakshina pilgrimage route have been closed. The District Collector ordered the targeted closure to facilitate crowd and traffic management during the annual religious event.Schools in Delhi-NCR, Mumbai and Bengaluru are expected to operate normally unless separate local notifications are issued. Authorities continue to monitor changing weather conditions in different regions.State-wise school status today
