Schools and colleges across Mumbai remained closed today after authorities declared aholiday in view of the India Meteorological Department’s orange alert for heavy rainfall. The precautionary measure was extended to educational institutions in Thane and Palghar districts as officials prioritised the safety of students amid forecasts of intense showers and gusty winds. While classrooms remained shut, government and private offices continued to function as usual. Civic authorities advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel as the city braces for more rain, with waterlogging and disruptions already reported in several areas over the past few days.Holiday Announced for Schools and CollegesThe Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) announced aholiday for all government, private and civic-run schools and colleges in Mumbai following the weather warning issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The decision also applies to educational institutions in Thane and Palghar districts.According to the civic administration, the move was taken as aprecaution to ensure the safety of students in view of the forecast of heavy rainfall and strong winds. Authorities also said that schools may conduct online classes if required.District Authorities Given FlexibilityOfficials stated that district authorities and school heads have been empowered to assess local weather conditions and take decisions regarding holidays where necessary. The arrangement allows administrations to respond quickly if rainfall intensifies in specific areas. The advisory noted that while educational institutions remain closed today, government and private offices will continue to operate. However, citizens have been urged to step outdoors only when necessary to avoid inconvenience caused by heavy rain.Heavy Rain Continues to Impact MumbaiMumbai and neighbouring regions have experienced persistent heavy rainfall over the past several days, leading to waterlogging, traffic disruptions and incidents of tree falls in different parts of the city. The spell of rain has also resulted in casualties, including the death of aschoolboy since the end of June.Earlier this week, Mumbai University had cancelled examinations scheduled in Palghar and Panvel because of the adverse weather conditions. With more rain expected, authorities have appealed to residents to stay alert and follow official advisories.
