Florida student Aaisha Asif named 2026 3M Young Scientist Challenge finalist for mussel-inspired eco-friendly adhesive

Most people walk past mussels without giving them a second thought. Yet these small shellfish possess a remarkable ability that has fascinated scientists for decades—they can cling firmly to rocks even as powerful waves crash against them, thanks to a natural adhesive they produce.For Aaisha Asif, a 12-year-old sixth-grade student at Pine View School in Florida, that extraordinary ability became the starting point for an idea that could one day make everyday adhesives cleaner and more environmentally friendly.Her project, “Muscle Power of Mussels,” has earned her a place among the 10 finalists in the 2026 3M Young Scientist Challenge, one of the United States’ premier science competitions for middle-school students. The finalists will now compete for the title of America’s Top Young Scientist and a $25,000 grand prize later this year.

Learning from nature to solve a modern problem

From household repairs to packaging, construction and manufacturing, adhesives are used almost everywhere. However, many conventional adhesives contain chemicals known as volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which can evaporate into the air and contribute to pollution while also raising health concerns in enclosed environments.Instead of looking for a complex industrial solution, Aaisha looked to nature.Her idea is to develop a mussel-inspired adhesive using natural proteins and iron-based crosslinkers that can create strong bonds while reducing dependence on harmful chemical ingredients.In her profile for the competition, Aaisha explains that she wanted to develop a safer and more sustainable alternative without compromising performance across different surfaces.“I entered the 3M Young Scientist Challenge because I enjoy creating real solutions to everyday problems by taking inspiration from the world around us,” she says.She hopes the competition will help her refine her research through mentorship from experienced scientists while improving the material’s practical applications.“I’m especially looking forward to mentorship and feedback from professionals, since that could help me see gaps in my approach and improve how the material performs for people actually affected by real-world challenges,” she says.

Why scientists are fascinated by mussels

Aaisha’s idea is based on a scientific concept known as biomimicry—designing new technologies by learning from nature.Mussels survive in one of the harshest environments imaginable. Despite being constantly exposed to seawater and pounding waves, they remain firmly attached to rocks using specialised adhesive proteins. Scientists around the world have spent years studying these natural bonding mechanisms because they could inspire safer medical glues, underwater adhesives and environmentally friendly industrial materials.Aaisha hopes her project can contribute to that growing field by creating an adhesive that is both effective and kinder to the environment.

A summer of mentorship and innovation

As part of the competition, each finalist is paired with a 3M scientist who helps develop the project before the final judging.Aaisha will be mentored by Dr Rohit Gupta, a Semiconductor Marketing Manager at 3M who previously worked in research and development, creating bonding materials for electric vehicle batteries and sustainable material technologies.A polymer scientist with multiple patents and several innovation awards, Gupta also actively mentors young students through STEM programmes. Over the coming months, he will help Aaisha strengthen her project before she presents it at the 3M Innovation Center in St. Paul, Minnesota, where the finalists will showcase their work in October.

Science begins with curiosity

For Aaisha, science is not confined to laboratories.When asked about her favourite invention of the past century, she chose CRISPR gene-editing technology, admiring its ability to precisely modify DNA and potentially transform medicine and agriculture.She believes scientific discoveries inspired by natural biological systems can solve some of humanity’s biggest challenges—from treating inherited diseases to developing crops that can better withstand drought and disease.Her long-term ambition reflects that mindset.“In 15 years, I aspire to be an environmental scientist because I’m passionate about studying nature and keeping it clean and sustainable,” she says. “By working together, I hope to contribute to meaningful solutions and help make a positive impact on the world through science, technology and innovation.”A quote she admires by renowned inventor and architect Buckminster Fuller perhaps sums up her approach best:“You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete.”

Young minds solving real-world problems

The 3M Young Scientist Challenge, organised by Discovery Education and 3M, encourages students in Grades 5 to 8 to identify everyday problems and develop science-based solutions. Finalists are selected based on the originality of their ideas, scientific thinking and communication skills before working with professional scientists to improve their innovations.While many children dream of becoming scientists in the future, Aaisha has already taken the first step—using observation, creativity and persistence to tackle an environmental problem through science.Whether her mussel-inspired adhesive eventually finds its way into homes, industries or laboratories remains to be seen.
