MUMBAI: NCP-SP leader Rohit Pawar, Fahad Ahmad and representatives of several student organisations met Mumbai Police Commissioner on Tuesday afternoon to raise concerns over alleged harassment of students following FIRs registered during recent student protests.The delegation sought clarity on the action being taken against students named in the cases. Representatives said police officials assured them that further proceedings against students would be handled cautiously and that no harsh action would be initiated.Police discuss notices and student responsesAamir Kazi of the All India Students’ Federation (AISF), who was part of the delegation, said the police assured them that they would proceed slowly with notices and other procedures related to the FIRs.“While the decision on withdrawing or quashing the FIRs can be taken only by the home department, the police have assured us that they will go slow with the notices and other procedures. The commissioner also told us that students can respond to summons notices over WhatsApp and visit the police station at their convenience,” Kazi said.The delegation had raised concerns regarding the impact of the FIRs on students involved in the protests and requested that the authorities consider their situation while proceeding with further action.Police explain process behind FIR registrationsAccording to Kazi, police officials informed the delegation that they were initially uncertain about the leadership of the protests, which resulted in multiple FIRs being registered.The police representatives assured the student groups that students would not face severe action in the ongoing proceedings.
