Mumbai University postpones July 6 exams as IMD alert, monsoon chaos bring city to a halt
The University of Mumbai has deferred all undergraduate and postgraduate examinations scheduled for July 6, 2026, after relentless monsoon rains, severe waterlogging and transport disruptions crippled the city. Acting on the IMD’s weather advisory, the university prioritised student safety and said a revised examination timetable will be announced soon, with existing hall tickets remaining valid.Mumbai University postpones July 6 exams as IMD alert, monsoon chaos bring city to a halt

Mumbai’s relentless monsoon has forced the University of Mumbai to halt its examination schedule, with authorities postponing all undergraduate and postgraduate examinations slated for July 6, 2026. Heavy rainfall, widespread waterlogging, and transport disruptions brought large parts of the city to standstill. The decision follows the India Meteorological Department‘s (IMD) weather advisory warning of adverse conditions across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. With roads inundated and public transport services severely affected, the university said student and staff safety could not be compromised.

University suspends July 6 examination schedule

In an official notification, the University of Mumbai announced that every undergraduate and postgraduate examination scheduled for July 6 has been deferred until further notice. The university attributed the decision to continuous downpours that triggered severe waterlogging across several parts of the city, making travel to examination centres unsafe. It instructed candidates not to report to their respective centres on the scheduled date. The postponement comes as Mumbai continues to grapple with the annual monsoon challenge, with persistent rain disrupting normal life and affecting road and rail connectivity.

Student safety cited as the overriding priority

The university said the postponement was prompted by prevailing weather conditions and the IMD’s advisory, which pointed to continued heavy rainfall across the region. With thousands of students dependent on suburban trains, buses and road transport to reach examination venues, officials decided that proceeding with the examinations under deteriorating weather conditions would expose candidates and staff to avoidable risks.

Fresh examination timetable to be released

While deferring the examinations, the university clarified that the papers have not been cancelled. A revised timetable for all examinations originally scheduled for July 6 will be announced shortly through the university’s official website. In its notification, the university stated: “New timetable for the said examination will be published very soon on the official website of University of Mumbai. Students are requested to frequently check the notices on the website of the university.”Students have been advised to monitor the university portal regularly for further announcements regarding the revised examination schedule.

Existing hall tickets remain valid

In order to prevent any sort of confusion for the rescheduled tests, the university ensured that candidates will not be asked to secure new admit cards. The students have been advised to keep hold of their hall ticket that will still be valid for the postponed examinations. The university also stated that the candidates should depend on updates released from the official university site.
