She couldn't spend much time in a classroom, but Mirabai Chanu never stopped learning: The education behind a Commonwealth Games champion

Mirabai Chanu’s “education” was built on resilience, life lessons, and unconventional learning environments rather than sitting in a traditional school classroom. While rigorous training schedules left her little time for a conventional desk education, her life story reflects a profound journey of self-discovery, formal higher education adaptations, and mental fortitude that culminated in her historic third consecutive gold medal at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The Classroom of Hard Knocks: Childhood in Manipur

Before stepping onto international podiums, Mirabai’s earliest “weightlifting academy” was the rugged terrain of her home village, Nongpok Kakching, in Manipur.• Physical Literacy: At just 12 years old, she was gathering and carrying massive bundles of firewood from the mountains—loads her older brothers struggled to lift. This daily labor unknowingly laid her physical foundation.• Resourcefulness: Lacking access to professional gear early on, she trained using makeshift bamboo sticks instead of metal barbells.• The Daily Commute: Her pursuit of professional coaching required her to travel 30 kilometers every single day, often hitchhiking with local sand-carrying trucks or taking crowded buses.

Adapting Higher Education for a Champion

Though she could not experience a standard student life, Mirabai did not abandon formal academics. She understood that sports and education could coexist through non-traditional formats:• Degree in Physical Education: She focused her higher studies on a degree in physical education, directly complementing her real-world training with sports science concepts.• Flexible Learning Environments: To manage her intense training and recovery cycles, she embraced flexible and distance learning models. As an online learner with institutions like Amity University Online and a student supported by Lovely Professional University (LPU), she utilized digital education to balance exams with international competitions.

The Syllabus of Failure and Perseverance

Mirabai’s true “master’s degree” came from surviving elite sports’ brutal setbacks:• The Rio 2016 Heartbreak: Her lowest point came at the 2016 Rio Olympics, where she failed to register a single successful lift in the clean & jerk section. Heartbroken and facing public scrutiny, she nearly quit the sport entirely. Guided by her mother’s advice—”Work honestly and keep believing”—she returned to training and redefined her mental approach.• Overcoming Pain: Her journey to the 2026 Glasgow Games was riddled with complex wrist and hip injuries. Her education involved learning to listen to her body, mastering sports rehabilitation, and building an unbreakable mental wall against self-doubt.

A Masterclass in Reliability

Her non-classroom education paid off on the global stage. On July 26, 2026, at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, she put on a clinic in execution. She lifted a total of 190kg (85kg snatch, 105kg clean & jerk) to capture India’s first gold medal of the Games. In doing so, she rewrote the record books, setting three new Commonwealth Games records and securing her third consecutive CWG gold title (2018, 2022, 2026).Mirabai Chanu proved that learning is not defined by four walls, but by an unwavering willingness to rise after every single fall.
