Jürgen Klopp has warned he will walk away as Germany manager if his family becomes the target of public scrutiny, making the declaration just hours after being unveiled as the man tasked with rebuilding one of world football’s biggest nations following another disappointing FIFA World Cup campaign. The former Liverpool manager has signed a contract running through to the 2030 World Cup and returns to coaching for the first time since leaving Anfield in 2024. After a spell overseeing Red Bull’s global football operation, Klopp now takes charge of a Germany side attempting to recover from a third successive men’s World Cup in which it failed to progress beyond the early knockout stages.Germany’s latest campaign ended in the Round of 32 with defeat to Paraguay, prompting Julian Nagelsmann’s departure and another period of soul-searching within the German Football Association (DFB).

Nagelsmann scrutiny and Wurzenberger spotlight

While Nagelsmann’s exit was ultimately driven by results, his tenure also became overshadowed by intense media focus on his relationship with Lena Wurzenberger.Wurzenberger, a former Bild reporter who previously covered Bayern Munich, began dating Nagelsmann shortly after his split from his wife Verena in 2022. Their relationship quickly drew attention due to her previous role reporting on him and Bayern, with German media even running headlines highlighting the unusual dynamic.During the World Cup, her presence around the Germany camp became a recurring talking point. She was frequently seen at training sessions, watching from balconies alongside players’ partners, and was reportedly present at the team hotel on multiple occasions. After Germany’s 7-1 win over Curaçao, she was seen observing substitutes during their warm-down, and reports suggested she travelled with Nagelsmann between team activities, including cycling with him to training the following day.German media speculated that her constant visibility may have created an awkward dynamic within the squad, with some suggesting players might feel less comfortable speaking openly when the coach’s partner was regularly present.Germany legend Lothar Matthäus also weighed in, stating that while it was normal for players’ families to visit, the same level of presence from the coach’s partner was “not ideal” during a major tournament.Without directly referencing the situation, Klopp made it clear during his unveiling that his own family’s privacy is non-negotiable.

Klopp issues clear warning

Speaking after his appointment, Klopp said criticism of his coaching would always be part of football, but insisted there was one line that must never be crossed.“The day you don’t want me anymore, you say so and I’m gone, without severance pay,” Klopp said, according to Bild.“If you say tomorrow that he’s rubbish, I’m gone. Not just one person, it would have to be more than that. If the DFB says he’s rubbish, I’m gone.”He then delivered his strongest message.“If you behave badly and don’t leave my family in peace, I’m gone.”Klopp also stressed that he has no intention of moving into another coaching role once his Germany tenure eventually comes to an end.“Criticise me if something doesn’t work. I’m happy to work on it. It’s all about the job.”“Jürgen Klopp doesn’t have a career after the national team. Ideally, this is the highlight of my career.”

Rebuilding Germany after another setback

Klopp replaces Nagelsmann following Germany’s Round of 32 exit to Paraguay, a defeat that extended an alarming run for four-time world champions who have now failed to make a deep run in three successive World Cups.

According to BBC Sport, Klopp described taking charge of his country as “a big honour” and suggested the national team job represents the pinnacle of his coaching career. He also said he feels refreshed after stepping away from day-to-day management following his departure from Liverpool two years ago.Rather than focusing solely on results, Klopp outlined a broader ambition of reconnecting supporters with the national team through entertaining football.“I want to create something with the national team that means that people go home after the game and think, ‘That was really cool.’ That’s what I’d like to see happen,” he said.He also admitted it had “been a while” since he regularly watched Germany outside major tournaments, underlining the scale of the challenge now facing him.

Strong support around the new era

Germany’s rebuilding project will not rest solely on Klopp’s shoulders.Former Arsenal and Germany defender Per Mertesacker has also joined the federation as Managing Director of Sport and is expected to play a key role in shaping the national team’s long-term direction.

Klopp, meanwhile, arrives with one of the strongest managerial résumés in modern football.During nearly nine years at Liverpool, he transformed the club into European and Premier League champions, winning the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup before stepping away in 2024, citing fatigue.

Focus firmly on football

Although Nagelsmann’s tenure became overshadowed at times by discussions surrounding his private life, Klopp has made it clear he wants attention directed solely toward Germany’s performances on the pitch. His message was equally simple and uncompromising: judge his football, question his decisions if necessary and dismiss him if results do not meet expectations—but leave his family out of it.With Germany searching for a fresh identity after another painful World Cup exit, Klopp now begins perhaps the biggest challenge of his managerial career, determined to restore one of football’s traditional powerhouses while establishing clear boundaries from the very first day of his reign.
