Himachal Pradesh directs all government schools to remain open on August 15 for Independence Day celebrations
The Himachal Pradesh Directorate of School Education has instructed all government schools to remain operational on August 15, 2026, to mark Independence Day through flag hoisting, cultural events, and patriotic programmes. Schools have also been directed to join official celebrations at district, sub-divisional, and tehsil headquarters, with authorities ordered to ensure strict implementation of the guidelines.

Government schools across Himachal Pradesh will remain open on August 15, 2026, as the state government has directed educational institutions to organise Independence Day celebrations with full participation. The Directorate of School Education has instructed schools to conduct flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural programmes, and other patriotic activities while ensuring that the national festival is observed with dignity, discipline, and enthusiasm.The directive aims to ensure uniform observance of Independence Day across all government schools and strengthen students’ participation in national celebrations.

Directorate issues statewide directive for Independence Day celebrations

According to an official order issued by the Directorate of School Education on July 29, all District Deputy Directors (Primary and Higher) and principals of government senior secondary schools have been instructed to make necessary arrangements for Independence Day celebrations.The order emphasises that every government school in the state must organise programmes that reflect the significance of the national occasion. Schools have been asked to celebrate the day with patriotic fervor while maintaining the decorum associated with the event.

Flag hoisting, cultural programmes and patriotic activities mandatory

Under the instructions, every government school will organise:

  • National flag-hoisting ceremonies
  • Patriotic cultural programmes
  • Activities highlighting India’s freedom struggle
  • Other events promoting national unity and constitutional values

The government expects schools to actively involve students and teachers in these programmes to commemorate the sacrifices made by India’s freedom fighters.

District education officers directed to ensure compliance

The Directorate has also instructed District Education Officers to circulate detailed guidelines among schools within their respective jurisdictions.Officials have been asked to ensure that all government schools remain open on August 15 and that the celebrations are conducted in accordance with the official instructions. The order mandates strict compliance at every administrative level.

Schools to participate in official district and tehsil functions

Apart from organising events on campus, educational institutions have also been directed to participate in official Independence Day functions held at the:

  • District headquarters
  • Sub-divisional headquarters
  • Tehsil headquarters

Independence Day 2026: India marks 79 years of freedom

India will celebrate its 79th Independence Day on August 15, 2026. The theme for this year’s national campaign is to celebrate the idea of freedom and encourage people, especially the younger generation, to help build an independent, self-sufficient, innovative, and futuristic India.As per the tradition followed in schools across the country, the celebration of the day takes place through hoisting of the flag, singing patriotic songs, delivering speeches, conducting skits, dancing performances, and many other cultural activities.

Students can also participate in MyGov competitions

Apart from participating in the celebrations organized by schools, there are other competitions for students related to Independence Day, which are run by the Government of India through the website, ‘MyGov’. These competitions usually consist of essay writing, painting, quiz, and other such activities focused on patriotism and nationalism.As per the government, those who win certain competitions have the chance of winning prizes worth Rs 15,000.
