Quitting a stable job to start a business is often portrayed as an exciting leap. Reality, however, is usually far less glamorous. For one Indian entrepreneur, the first six months after leaving his corporate IT job brought no income at all. Not a single paying client. Just uncertainty, self-doubt and the constant fear that he might have to abandon his dream and return to a regular job. Now, just over a year later, the freelancer says he has crossed $6,300 in monthly profit, working from a Tier-3 city in India. His story, shared on Reddit, has struck a chord with thousands of readers—not because of the earnings alone, but because of the long, uncertain road that came before them.

From Zero Income to Thousands in Profit: How an Indian Freelancer Built a Business From a Small Town

Six months without earning a single rupee

According to the Reddit post, the entrepreneur moved back to India, quit his job and decided to build a freelance marketing business despite having little certainty about the future. The beginning was far from easy.“There were months when I questioned everything,” he wrote. “I wasn’t sure if I would ever make it work.”Rather than giving up, he spent that time learning new skills, investing in courses and mentorship, and reaching out to potential clients every day.He admits that the guidance helped provide direction, but believes success ultimately came down to consistent execution.“I invested in some online mentorship, but honestly… it was 98% my own effort,” he wrote.

Cold emails, rejection and persistence

Unlike many freelancers who depend entirely on online marketplaces, he said most of his early clients came through cold outreach. He contacted businesses on LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram and through cold emails, offering marketing services such as Google Ads, Meta Ads, automation and CRM solutions. The process wasn’t easy.Clients left. Some expected instant results. Others found cheaper alternatives or decided to bring the work in-house.“The only way to survive in this game is to keep looking for new clients,” he wrote while explaining the reality of client churn.Building authority also became a major focus. Instead of relying only on sales pitches, he worked on improving his LinkedIn profile, creating content on YouTube and strengthening his online presence so prospective clients could trust his expertise.

The anxiety hasn’t disappeared

Despite reaching a level of profitability that many aspiring freelancers would celebrate, he says financial anxiety hasn’t completely gone away.He admits he still worries about the uncertainty that comes with running a business.Instead of aggressively scaling, he has chosen a slower approach. He recently started spending about $20 a day on advertisements to attract new clients but plans to increase that investment only after achieving consistent monthly profits of around $10,000.His goal is equally practical: build enough savings before taking bigger risks.

A reminder that success rarely happens overnight

The Reddit post has received hundreds of comments from people looking for advice on freelancing, online businesses and client acquisition.Looking back, the entrepreneur says the biggest lesson from the past year isn’t about marketing or sales. It’s about consistency. One year ago, he says, the idea of earning thousands of dollars each month felt impossible. Today, he views the journey as proof that progress often happens quietly before it becomes visible. For anyone considering freelancing or building an online business, his experience serves as a reminder that overnight success stories often leave out the hardest chapter—the months when nothing seems to be working, but showing up every day eventually begins to make the difference.Disclaimer: This article is based on a Reddit post and subsequent discussion shared by an individual user.
