A single sentence that changed everything
The controversy began when an evaluator checking answer sheets at Dr. Harisingh Gour Central University noticed an unusual sentence written by a student: “Click the link to watch the full video answer.”The line made little sense in a handwritten university examination, but it instantly stood out. Instead of ignoring it as a careless mistake, the evaluator reported the matter to the Controller of Examinations.That one observation triggered a wider review of answer sheets submitted by students from the same college. As more papers were examined, university officials reportedly found a recurring pattern that suggested the issue was far bigger than a single student’s error.
Investigation points to alleged AI-assisted cheating
According to the university’s preliminary findings, several students from Satpura College of Information and Biotechnology in Sausar, Chhindwara, allegedly copied responses generated by ChatGPT during their examinations.Officials suspect students used mobile phones inside the examination hall to generate answers and then reproduced them almost word for word in their answer booklets.The accidental inclusion of the phrase about a “video answer” is believed to have been copied directly from AI-generated content without being edited, effectively exposing the alleged method used during the examination.
Similar answers found across multiple subjects
The inquiry reportedly found that the suspected malpractice was not limited to one examination or one student. University officials examined answer sheets across three different subjects and discovered that numerous students had written nearly identical responses. Such similarities, investigators believe, are consistent with AI-generated answers being copied verbatim rather than independently written.The examinations were conducted in May for students of the second, fourth and sixth semesters under the university’s centralised evaluation system. Introduced from the previous semester, the system requires answer sheets from all 17 affiliated colleges to be sent to the university in Sagar for assessment, making it easier to identify unusual patterns across institutions.
Entire college’s results put on hold
While results for students of Dr Harisingh Gour Central University and its other affiliated colleges have already been declared, the university has withheld the results of all students from Satpura College of Information and Biotechnology pending the outcome of the investigation.The move reflects the seriousness with which the university is treating the allegations, as authorities continue to verify the extent of the suspected malpractice.
University plans further action
University Public Relations Officer Vivek Jaiswal said notices will first be issued to the college management seeking an explanation.Depending on the findings of the inquiry, the university may take additional measures, including conducting re-examinations or shifting the examination centre for future tests. The final decision will be based on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
