Former Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming is set to take charge of England’s Test team, with a report claiming the former New Zealand captain has emerged as the frontrunner to succeed Brendon McCullum in the red-ball setup. According to The Telegraph, Fleming has been identified as England’s preferred candidate after a comprehensive interview process led by managing director Rob Key.

Fleming emerges as ECB’s top choice

The Telegraph report states that Fleming outperformed other contenders, including former England batter Jonathan Trott and current England men’s performance director Richard Dawson, to secure the role. If appointed, Fleming will replace fellow New Zealander Brendon McCullum, who recently stepped down as England’s Test head coach following a disappointing run of results in the longest format.Despite leaving the Test role, McCullum will remain in charge of England’s white-ball teams, setting up a unique coaching partnership. The duo share a long-standing relationship, with McCullum making his Test debut under Fleming’s captaincy for New Zealand. Fleming has also been regarded as one of McCullum’s biggest mentors during his cricketing career, a factor the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) reportedly believes will help ensure smooth coordination between the two coaching units.

End of an era at Chennai Super Kings

The reported appointment comes shortly after Fleming ended his remarkable association with the Chennai Super Kings franchise. Over an 18-year stint across CSK and its sister franchises, including Texas Super Kings and Joburg Super Kings, Fleming established himself as one of franchise cricket’s most successful coaches.During his time with CSK in the IPL, he guided the team to five Indian Premier League titles, helping build one of the competition’s most consistent and successful dynasties.England are scheduled to host Pakistan in a three-match Test series next month. However, the report suggests former captain Joe Root is expected to lead the side on an interim basis before Fleming officially assumes charge during England’s winter tour of South Africa. If confirmed, Fleming’s appointment would mark one of the biggest coaching changes in world cricket, with England entrusting one of the game’s most decorated tacticians to oversee their Test rebuild ahead of the 2027 Ashes.
