Spain midfielder Dani Olmo has spoken publicly for the first time about the altercation that followed his side’s 2026 FIFA World Cup final victory over Argentina, rejecting Roberto Ayala’s apology and accusing the Argentina assistant coach of lying about what triggered the incident. The Barcelona midfielder became one of several Spain players caught up in the chaotic scenes that erupted after the final whistle in New Jersey, where Spain secured their second World Cup title with a 1-0 extra-time victory thanks to Ferran Torres’ decisive goal.FIFA has since opened disciplinary proceedings into Argentina’s post-match conduct after a confrontation involving several players and members of the coaching staff.

Ayala’s explanation prompts response from Olmo

The disorder began after Nahuel Molina confronted Spain captain Rodri following the final whistle, with the exchange quickly escalating into a mass altercation involving players and staff from both teams.During the confrontation, television footage showed Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala making contact with Olmo as the Spain international stood alongside teammate Eric García.Earlier this week, Ayala acknowledged the incident while insisting it had been misunderstood. Speaking about the confrontation, the former Argentina defender said it had been “more of a shove than a punch” and claimed his reaction came in response to something Olmo had said.Ayala also indicated that he intended to apologise if he met the Spain midfielder in person.

Olmo: ‘He’s lying’

Speaking to Diari de Terrassa, Olmo firmly rejected both Ayala’s explanation and the apology.“Someone who claims to be sorry, but justifies a punch by saying it was a response to a comment, probably isn’t sorry at all,” Olmo said. The Spain international then directly challenged Ayala’s version of events.“He’s lying, because I didn’t say anything to him, so I don’t need him to apologise.”Rather than focusing solely on the incident itself, Olmo said genuine accountability requires accepting responsibility without attempting to justify what happened.“What truly defines us isn’t the mistake, but the courage to own up to it with humility, honesty and dignity.”His comments directly contradict Ayala’s claim that the confrontation was provoked by remarks from the Spanish midfielder.

Spain want to be remembered for their conduct

Although the post-match scenes dominated much of the discussion after the final, Olmo said he hopes Spain’s World Cup triumph will ultimately be remembered for the way the team conducted itself throughout the tournament.“I want people to be proud of how we competed, how we won and, above all, of our behaviour,” he said.

The 27-year-old also reflected on the wider responsibility carried by elite footballers, particularly given the influence they have on younger supporters.“The reach of football means that we players are role models for children and future generations, and that carries a great responsibility.”

Collective spirit behind Spain’s triumph

Away from the controversy, Olmo highlighted the values he believes were central to Spain’s World Cup-winning campaign.“The group, the collective, always above individual players,” he said, describing Luis de la Fuente’s squad as a close-knit group built on teamwork rather than individual stardom.Olmo also praised the coaching and support staff, stressing that Spain’s success was founded on months of meticulous preparation.“It’s all about hard work, nothing else, to achieve the goal.”He explained that preparation extended well beyond training sessions on the pitch.“The work isn’t just physical. Invisible training is crucial, nutrition, rest, recovery, mental preparation, match analysis and healthy habits.”According to Olmo, those elements formed the foundation of Spain’s successful campaign, helping the team navigate the demands of the tournament before defeating Argentina to lift the World Cup for the second time in the nation’s history. While FIFA’s investigation into the post-match incidents remains ongoing, Olmo made clear that he believes Spain’s lasting legacy from the tournament should be defined not by the confrontation after the final whistle, but by the football, discipline and collective spirit that carried them to the world title.
