NEW DELHI: India’s Narender Berwal fell just short of winning the Commonwealth Games boxing title, but the heavyweight boxer has already shifted his focus to the Asian Games. After settling for silver in the men’s 90+kg category, Berwal promised to come back stronger and make up for the missed opportunity.Berwal lost to England’s Damar Thomas in the final but said the defeat has only motivated him to work harder for the next major event.“I missed out by a narrow margin, but I will try to make up for it at the Asian Games. I gave my best; it was a tough fight against the English opponent, and I missed the win by a whisker. I’ll make up for it at the Asian Games,” Berwal said.“We performed much better than we had anticipated. Boxers like Sumit Kundu, Aditya Yadav, Parveen Hooda, and Kapil Pokhariya lost very close 3-2 bouts. We could have potentially won 14 out of 14 medals. Those four boxers lost by the narrowest of margins. You will see great results in the upcoming Asian Games. We will prepare thoroughly and give our best,” the Indian boxer said.

Berwal falls short after spirited fight

Berwal produced a determined performance in the gold medal bout but was beaten by Damar Thomas through a unanimous 5-0 decision.Despite missing the top prize, the Indian heavyweight finished on the podium with a silver medal and capped off an impressive campaign in Glasgow.

India’s best-ever boxing campaign

Berwal’s silver helped India complete its most successful Commonwealth Games boxing campaign. The Indian boxing team finished on top of the medal standings with a record 10 medals – seven gold and three silver.
