Karnataka launches year-long drive to train 65,000 teachers for bilingual classrooms
The Karnataka Directorate of State Educational Research and Training (DSERT), in partnership with the Regional Institute of English, South India (RIESI), has launched a year-long academic support programme to enhance bilingual teaching in government schools. The initiative will equip nearly 65,000 teachers with classroom strategies, mentoring and continuous professional development through a phased training model across the state.

In its attempt to strengthen the bilingual schools, Directorate of State Educational Research and Training (DSERT) initiated a year long state level workshop with the Regional Institute of English, South India (RIESI).The workshop focused on strengthening the implementation of bilingual education in government schools by equipping District Resource Team members with the knowledge and skills required to support teachers in the field. Sessions covered experience sharing and addressing classroom challenges, baseline assessment, teaching English through textbook-based pedagogy, effective teacher talk and classroom language and familiarisation with the English, EVS, Mathematics and Kannada textbooks, with special emphasis on identifying difficult learning areas and classroom strategies. The workshop marks the beginning of a year-long teacher handholding programme for bilingual schools of the Department of School Education and Literacy, Government of Karnataka. Following the State-level workshops, the trained District Resource Teams will conduct district-level workshops for Master Resource Persons (MRPs), who will subsequently organise cluster-level workshops for teachers. Together, the DRTs and MRPs will implement a comprehensive year-long academic support programme for around 65,000 teachers across Karnataka from July 2026 to March 2027 through face-to-face workshops, regular online follow-up sessions, classroom mentoring, and continuous academic support to strengthen bilingual teaching-learning practices in government schools.Around 389 DRTs were trained from July 21-21, 22 and 23 July 2026.
