The Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) was officially recognized as an Institute of National Eminence by the Income Tax Department on March 27, 2025. This designation grants a 100% tax exemption on donations made to the institute under Section 80G of the Income-tax Act, 1961. Previously, donations were eligible for only a 50% tax exemption.
This new status is expected to boost donations, helping IITH advance in academics, research, technology, and infrastructure. It highlights IITH’s growing reputation as a leader in science, technology, and innovation.
IITH Director, Prof. B. S. Murty, welcomed the recognition, inviting philanthropists and corporate partners to support the institute’s mission of transformative education and research. Prof. Mahendrakumar Madhavan, Dean (ACR), emphasized that the 100% tax exemption would have a greater impact on society by strengthening IITH’s research and development efforts.
In the 2024 National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), IITH was ranked 8th in engineering and 12th overall. Recently, IITH and Swinburne University of Technology, Australia, established the SIMMECT joint research institute to enhance collaboration in manufacturing, materials, energy, and communication technologies. This partnership aims to drive innovations with significant industrial and societal benefits.
