The BJP has demanded an apology from Sonia Gandhi for calling the Waqf Amendment Bill a “brazen assault on the Constitution.” Her comments caused a disruption in the Lok Sabha.
On Friday, the BJP called for Sonia Gandhi to apologize after her remarks about the bill, which was passed in both Houses of Parliament. On Thursday, while speaking at a Congress meeting, Gandhi criticized the BJP-led government, saying the Waqf Amendment Bill was rushed through Parliament and was part of the BJP’s plan to create division in society.
Her comments led to protests in the Lok Sabha, with BJP members shouting “Sonia Gandhi, maafi maango” (Sonia Gandhi, apologize). The House was adjourned shortly after.
Gandhi also expressed concern about opposition leaders not being allowed to speak in Parliament, saying it was troubling for democracy. She added that the government was preventing the Opposition from raising important issues.
Earlier on Friday, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said the party would challenge the bill’s constitutionality in the Supreme Court, calling it an attack on the Constitution by the Modi government.
The Waqf Bill passed with 128 votes in favor and 95 against in the Rajya Sabha, and 288 votes in favor and 232 against in the Lok Sabha. Parliament also approved the Mussalman Wakf (Repeal) Bill, 2025.
