India’s Unnati Sharma won the bronze medal in the women’s 63kg judo event at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow on Sunday, defeating South Africa’s Skye Knoester by ippon in the bronze-medal contest.Unnati wrapped up the bout in just 1 minute and 7 seconds with a decisive move. She hooked her leg to unbalance Knoester before throwing her cleanly onto her back to earn an ippon — the highest score in judo — and seal the contest instantly. The Indian had earlier lost to Australia’s Saya Middleton in the semifinal but recovered well to finish on the podium with a convincing win. However, Inunganbi Takhellambam (women’s 70kg) and Karanjit Singh Maan (men’s 90kg) could not make the most of their repechage chances and missed out on medals.Unnati began her campaign with a Round of 16 win over Eswatini’s Lamulela Magagula. She won by ippon in 1 minute and 39 seconds after scoring two successive waza-aris.She then beat New Zealand’s Qona Christie in the quarterfinal, winning by waza-ari after also registering a yuko to book her place in the semifinals.Harsh Tokas suffered a 0-1 defeat to Cyprus’ Odysseas Georgakis in the men’s 81kg quarterfinal after his opponent scored a yuko. Tokas came back to beat Peniamina Percival in the repechage.Karanjit lost his men’s 90kg quarterfinal to Canada’s Guillaume Gaulin by ippon. Earlier, he had defeated New Zealand’s Elliott Connolly by ippon in 3 minutes and 29 seconds. He later lost to Scotland’s Scott Cusack in the repechage. In the women’s 70kg quarterfinal, Inunganbi Takhellambam lost to Canada’s Charlie Thibault by ippon in 3 minutes and 23 seconds after conceding a yuko earlier in the bout. She then faced England’s Jemima Yeats-Brown in the repechage but was unable to keep her medal hopes alive.
