Monsoon rain forces school closures in multiple districts while Delhi and Mumbai remain open

NEW DELHI: Schools remained closed in several districts across India today, July 9, after local administrations announced holidays in response to severe monsoon conditions. Authorities ordered the closures as heavy rainfall, waterlogging and landslide risks affected multiple regions, with decisions varying according to local weather conditions and safety assessments.While educational institutions remained shut in parts of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Kerala and Karnataka, no blanket closure was announced for Delhi, Noida, Mumbai or Pune. Officials in these cities confirmed that schools would continue to function as scheduled unless individual institutions issued separate notifications.Districts where schools are closedSeveral districts have suspended classes across government and private institutions following weather alerts and adverse ground conditions.

In Uttar Pradesh, authorities ordered the closure of schools for all classes up to Grade 12 in Ghaziabad. In Mathura and Hathras, classroom teaching has been suspended for students up to Grade 8.Uttarakhand has announced a complete closure of all private and government educational institutions, including Anganwadi centres, in Dehradun, Udham Singh Nagar and Nainital following an India Meteorological Department orange alert.Kerala and Karnataka continue precautionary closuresKerala has declared a compulsory holiday for schools and colleges in Wayanad, Kozhikode and Malappuram. The decision follows concerns over localised flooding and the possibility of landslides in vulnerable areas.In Karnataka, educational institutions remain closed in parts of Shivamogga district. Authorities have extended the suspension of classes in Hosanagar and Sagar taluks, where heavy rainfall continues.Cities where schools remain openDespite persistent rainfall and traffic disruptions, Delhi and Noida have not announced a city-wide school holiday. Educational institutions are operating according to their regular schedules unless individual schools communicate separate arrangements.In Maharashtra, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and state authorities confirmed that schools in Mumbai and Pune will remain open after weather warnings for the region were downgraded.
