Karnataka school holiday: Schools, colleges shut in Hosanagar and Sagar taluks of Shivamogga due to heavy rain
Schools and colleges closed in Karnataka’s Shivamogga as heavy rain triggers holiday

Schools and colleges in Hosanagar and Sagar taluks of Karnataka’s Shivamogga district will remain closed on Wednesday, July 8, as heavy rainfall continues to affect several parts of the region. The district administration announced the holiday as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of students amid persistent rain and strong winds. The holiday has been announced in schools, pre-university colleges, and anganwadis of the affected areas, where schools will have to make up for the missed working days through holiday classes.Holiday due to continuous heavy rain in the districtIt is to be noted that schools and colleges in the affected area were already closed due to heavy rain in the district but have now been declared off till further orders. As per reports, continuous rainfall and poor weather conditions have forced the concerned authorities to close down educational institutes in the area.Hosanagar Tahsildar Bharat Raj issued an order declaring a holiday for schools, anganwadi centres and PU colleges on July 8. Similar precautionary measures have also been implemented in Sagar taluk as the weather situation remains unfavourable.Authorities have advised residents to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary travel in areas that are vulnerable to waterlogging or other rain-related disruptions.Educational institutions asked to compensate for lost classesTo minimise the impact of the closure on academics, educational institutions have been instructed to conduct classes on designated holidays to compensate for the lost instructional days. The move is aimed at ensuring that the prescribed syllabus is completed within the academic calendar without affecting students’ learning.Officials said such measures have become necessary as repeated rain-related disruptions could otherwise impact the academic schedule during the ongoing monsoon season.Second closure of school since the arrival of the southwest monsoonThis is the second closure of schools in the Shivamogga district following a Red Alert and due to heavy rains since the arrival of the southwest monsoon season in the region. The area has been experiencing heavy monsoon season activities, which have forced the authorities to be on alert and watch the weather conditions. Future decisions as to the closure or reopening of the schools will be determined by the weather conditions going forward in the next few days. However, in the neighboring state of Odisha, there were heavy rains causing the closure of schools in some districts in the state on July 7. But as at July 8, there has not been any new development on the matter of school closures. It is prudent to be aware of any further announcements concerning this matter.
