India’s para athletes delivered their finest-ever performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, matching the country’s cumulative medal tally from all previous editions in a single campaign. The 28-member Indian para contingent concluded its Glasgow campaign with seven medals, three gold, two silver and two bronze making it India’s most successful showing in Commonwealth Games para sport history. With no para events scheduled on the final day of competition, the tally was confirmed at the end of Saturday’s action.

Best-ever Commonwealth Games campaign

The Glasgow performance represents a major leap forward for Indian para sports. Since para events were introduced at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester 2002, India had won only seven medals across all previous editions combined. Glasgow alone has now matched that total, underlining the rapid rise of the country’s para athletes on the international stage. The previous best performance came at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, where India secured two medals in para table tennis through Bhavina Patel (gold) and Sonalben Patel (bronze). Although Sudhir initially won the para powerlifting title in Birmingham, his gold medal was later stripped after an anti-doping rule violation.

Para athletics powers India’s success

Para athletics emerged as India’s biggest contributor in Glasgow, accounting for six of the seven medals, three gold, two silver and one bronze. The remaining medal came in para powerlifting, where Jhandu Kumar earned a bronze medal to complete India’s medal tally. The campaign also ended a 20-year wait for an Indian para athletics medal at the Commonwealth Games. Before Glasgow, India’s last para athletics podium finish had come in 2006, when Ranjith Kumar Jayaseelan won a medal in the men’s seated discus throw.Three Indian one-two podium finishesIndia dominated several events by securing multiple podium finishes.

  • In the women’s F57 shot put, Sharmila won gold while Shilpa Shyla claimed bronze.
  • The men’s T47 100m saw Dilip Mahadu Gavit sprint to gold, with Mohammed Basil taking silver.
  • Another memorable result came in the men’s F57 shot put, where Soman Rana struck gold and Shubham Juyal added silver to complete an Indian one-two finish.
