NEW DELHI: Ireland’s hopes of securing direct qualification for the 2027 ICC Men’s ODI World Cup were washed away on Wednesday after persistent rain forced the opening ODI against Afghanistan in Bready to be abandoned without a ball being bowled. The washout officially ended Ireland’s already slim mathematical chance of climbing into the automatic qualification spots in the ICC ODI rankings before the September 30, 2026 cut-off date, meaning they must now take the longer route to the World Cup through the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier.Currently ranked 12th in the ODI rankings, Ireland needed an extraordinary sequence of results to qualify directly. They had to complete a 5-0 clean sweep over Afghanistan while also hoping West Indies lost both of their remaining ODIs against India. With the first match abandoned, that possibility disappeared.

Why Ireland missed direct qualification

The 2027 ODI World Cup, to be jointly hosted by South Africa and Zimbabwe, will feature 12 teams.Hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe qualify automatically, while the remaining direct qualification spots are decided through the ICC ODI rankings at the September 30 cut-off.Ireland’s ranking left them outside the automatic qualification places, and only a dramatic rise through a series whitewash over Afghanistan, coupled with favourable results elsewhere, could have changed their fate. The abandoned match in Bready ensured that Ireland could no longer gain enough ranking points to overtake Afghanistan, West Indies and Zimbabwe before the deadline.

How Ireland can still reach the 2027 World Cup

Despite missing direct qualification, Ireland remain firmly in contention for the tournament through the qualification pathway. They will compete in the 10-team ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier, where the stakes are high. The tournament winner will earn a direct place in the 12-team World Cup.Teams finishing second, third and fourth will advance to the World Cup Super Series, where they will battle for the final available spot in the main tournament. The Qualifier will feature the two lowest-ranked Full Member nations in the ODI rankings — excluding hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe — along with the top four teams from the ICC Cricket World Cup League 2 and four teams emerging from the World Cup Qualifier Playoff. The Playoff itself will include the bottom four sides from League 2 and four teams from the ICC Challenge League. The top four teams from that competition will progress to the Qualifier. The Challenge League consists of 12 teams split into two groups of six, with each group playing three round-robin tournaments during the qualification cycle. The top two teams from each group will advance to the Playoff.Ireland will be determined to avoid a repeat of the heartbreak they suffered ahead of the 2023 ODI World Cup, when they were eliminated in the Super Six stage of the Qualifier and failed to book a place at the tournament in India. With direct qualification now out of reach, their road to the 2027 World Cup will once again depend on navigating the demanding qualifying route.
