India brought an end to England’s remarkable 12-year unbeaten run in Men’s ODIs at Edgbaston with a convincing six-wicket victory on 1st ODI. India entered the ODI series on the back of a disappointing 4-0 T20I series defeat and were determined to bounce back. The visitors responded in emphatic fashion, ending England’s long-standing winning streak at their home ground. England had remained unbeaten in seven consecutive Men’s ODIs at Edgbaston since 2015. The last team to defeat them in a 50-over international at the Birmingham venue was also India, who registered a comprehensive nine-wicket victory on September 2, 2014.

Date Opponent Result
September 2, 2014 India Lost by 9 wickets
June 9, 2015 New Zealand Won by 210 runs
June 24, 2016 Sri Lanka Won by 10 wickets
June 10, 2017 Australia Won by 40 runs (DLS)
June 30, 2019 India Won by 31 runs
July 11, 2019 Australia Won by 8 wickets
July 13, 2021 Pakistan Won by 3 wickets
May 29, 2025 West Indies Won by 238 runs
July 14, 2026 India Lost by 6 wickets

Adding to the win, India registered their sixth consecutive ODI victory over England, setting a new record for their longest winning streak against the Three Lions. Their previous best was five successive wins, a feat they had achieved on three separate occasions.

England’s collapse after strong start

The hosts made a promising start, reaching 61 without loss, before India’s bowlers triggered a dramatic collapse that left them reeling at 80/5. Joe Root held the innings together with an unbeaten 76, while Liam Dawson added a valuable 68. Their 111-run partnership helped England recover to 258 before they were bowled out.Axar Patel played a pivotal role with the ball, claiming four wickets and breaking the backbone of England’s batting line-up with figures of 4/62.

India complete comfortable chase

India’s pursuit was built around another assured knock from captain Shubman Gill, who scored 80 before retiring hurt with cramps. The visitors briefly lost momentum after slipping to 160/4, but Axar Patel and Washington Sundar combined to extinguish England’s hopes. The pair stitched together an unbeaten 102-run stand, with Axar finishing on 57* and Sundar remaining unbeaten on 52, as India sealed victory with 28 deliveries remaining. Also this is only the second instance of India successfully chasing down a 250+ target in ODIs since 2016 where either Rohit or Kohli failed to get to 50; the other instance came against England at Old Trafford in 2022 when they chased down 260, with both Rohit & Kohli scoring 17 runs each.
