Jason Holder, Andre Russell power LA Knight Riders to crucial win over San Francisco Unicorns
Los Angeles Knight Riders beat San Francisco Unicorns (X)

Los Angeles Knight Riders strengthened their Major League Cricket (MLC) 2026 playoff push with an 11-run victory over San Francisco Unicorns in Dallas, a result that reshuffled the top of the standings for the second time on the day. After MI New York had earlier climbed into the top three, the Knight Riders overtook them by defeating the table-toppers. The win took Los Angeles to 10 points, level with San Francisco but behind on net run rate, while MI New York also sit on 10 points in third place. The contest swung repeatedly before Jason Holder and Andre Russell produced match-winning performances with the ball to deny the Unicorns in a tense chase. Earlier, Los Angeles looked on course for a total in excess of 200 before San Francisco’s bowlers fought back impressively at the death. The Knight Riders were powered by Colin Munro, who struck 52 from 43 deliveries, and Andre Russell, whose explosive 40 came from only 18 balls after arriving at No. 3. Russell’s aggressive knock shifted momentum early before Munro stitched together another valuable partnership with Matthew Tromp, who narrowly missed a half-century after making 49 from 28 balls. However, the innings lost momentum once Munro departed in the 14th over. San Francisco struck regularly during the closing stages, claiming four wickets while conceding only 38 runs in the final five overs to restrict the Knight Riders to 184 for 7. Haris Rauf was the standout bowler with figures of 3 for 25, while Xavier Bartlett picked up two wickets. Despite the late slowdown, Los Angeles made the perfect start with the ball. Holder dismantled the Unicorns’ top order by removing Finn Allen, Lhuan-dre Pretorius and Sanjay Krishnamurthi inside the Powerplay. Russell added to the damage by dismissing Aaron Hardie with a caught-and-bowled chance as San Francisco slumped to 42 for 4 in the fifth over. Hassan Khan and captain Matthew Short rebuilt the innings with a composed 76-run partnership that revived the chase and kept the required rate under control. The breakthrough eventually arrived at the beginning of the 14th over when Lloyd Pope dismissed Hassan after Holder completed a sharp catch at extra cover. Ali Khan then removed Short at the start of the following over before Shadley van Schalkwyk dismissed Xavier Bartlett, leaving the Unicorns with a mountain to climb. Hammad Azam refused to surrender, launching a stunning counterattack that briefly swung the momentum back in San Francisco’s favour. The all-rounder hammered three sixes in the 17th over and continued attacking in the closing overs, reducing the equation to 37 from the final three overs despite Russell dismissing Brody Couch at the other end. Azam’s determined 40 from just 19 balls kept the contest alive as he struck boundaries off both Van Schalkwyk and Holder. But Holder delivered the decisive blow by trapping him lbw at the end of the penultimate over. That left the Unicorns needing 12 runs from the final over with only one wicket in hand. Russell ensured there would be no dramatic finish, bouncing out Haris Rauf with the first delivery of the last over to seal an important victory for the Knight Riders. Brief scores: Los Angeles Knight Riders 184/7 in 20 overs (Colin Munro 52, Matthew Tromp 49, Andre Russell 40; Haris Rauf 3-25, Xavier Bartlett 2-24) beat San Francisco Unicorns 173 in 19.1 overs (Hassan Khan 45, Matthew Short 43, Hammad Azam 40; Jason Holder 4-40, Andre Russell 3-42) by 11 runs.
