NEW DELHI: The resounding success of Indian Army athletes at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow is far more than a medal-winning campaign—it is the culmination of years of scientific planning, relentless discipline and institutional excellence. At the heart of this success stands the Army Sports Institute (ASI), Pune, India’s premier military high performance centre, which has once again demonstrated why it is regarded as one of the country’s finest centres for elite athlete development. With Army boxers contributing an extraordinary haul of 8 medals at the CWG, ASI’s contribution to Indian boxing has reached unprecedented heights. From Olympic hopefuls to Commonwealth champions, the institute continues to produce athletes capable of competing—and winning—against the very best in the world.

Building Champions, Not Just Athletes

Established in 2005, the Army Sports Institute was envisioned as the Indian Army’s flagship project to identify, nurture and develop sporting excellence. Twenty-five years later, that vision has evolved into one of the country’s most successful high-performance ecosystems.Unlike conventional training centres, ASI integrates every aspect of athlete development under one roof. Elite coaching, sports science, strength and conditioning, biomechanics, nutrition, psychology, physiotherapy, recovery management and performance analytics operate seamlessly to maximise every athlete’s potential. This holistic approach has transformed ASI into a benchmark for high-performance sport in India.

Boxing: The Crown Jewel

Boxing has emerged as one of ASI’s greatest success stories. The institute’s talent identification programme scouts promising youngsters from across India and systematically develops them through the Boys and Girls Sports Companies before transitioning the best performers into elite national-level competitors. The results are unmistakable. At Glasgow 2026, Army boxers dominated the competition, winning medals across multiple weight categories and forming the backbone of India’s historic boxing campaign. Their performances reflected exceptional technical preparation, tactical maturity and the mental resilience that are hallmarks of Army training. India’s boxing team produced its best-ever CWG performance with seven gold and three silver medals overall, underscoring the depth of the programme.

The High Performance Advantage

Success at ASI is not accidental.Every training session is data-driven. Athlete workloads are scientifically monitored. Recovery protocols minimise injury risk. Nutrition plans are customised. Performance is analysed through modern sports science and technology. This integrated approach ensures that athletes peak when it matters most—at international championships.Equally important is the military ethos that defines every athlete trained at ASI: discipline, resilience, teamwork and the determination to perform under pressure.

Beyond Boxing

While boxing has become a flagship discipline, ASI’s excellence extends across athletics, wrestling, weightlifting, diving, fencing, archery and several Olympic sports. While boxing led the Army Sports Institute’s remarkable CWG campaign, its excellence extended well beyond the ring. Army athletes scripted history in athletics with a series of landmark performances. Naib Subedar Gulveer Singh became the first Indian ever to win a silver medal in the men’s 10,000m and followed it with a historic bronze in the 5,000m—the first medal by an Indian in the event at the Commonwealth Games. In doing so, he also became the first Indian track and field athlete to win two medals at a single CWG.Adding to the historic achievements, Naib Subedar Sarvesh Kushare won the silver medal in High Jump, marking India’s first-ever CWG medal in the men’s high jump. In the weightlifting arena Hav Ajaya Babu won a silver medal and created a new record in Snatch category. Together, these breakthrough performances reaffirm that the Army Sports Institute is not merely producing champions in one discipline but is emerging as India’s most successful multi-sport high-performance centre, consistently delivering athletes capable of rewriting the nation’s sporting history. The institute has consistently produced Olympians, Asian Games medallists, CWG champions and national record holders. Many of India’s finest sporting achievements over the past decade have carried the unmistakable imprint of the Army Sports Institute.

A Model for India’s Olympic Ambitions

As India intensifies its preparations for future Olympic Games, the Army Sports Institute provides a proven blueprint for sustained international success. Its combination of early talent identification, world-class coaching, cutting-edge sports science and unwavering institutional support has created a system capable of producing champions year after year. The Glasgow CWG have once again reaffirmed an enduring truth: when India celebrates sporting excellence, the Army Sports Institute is often at the heart of that success. From nurturing young talent to producing Commonwealth champions, ASI continues to live its motto—transforming potential into podium finishes and inspiring a new generation of athletes to wear the Tricolour with pride. The remarkable contribution of Army athletes at Glasgow is not merely a medal tally; it is a testament to twenty-five years of vision, investment and unwavering commitment to sporting excellence. Champions are not born overnight—they are forged in Olive Green.
