NEW DELHI: Former Australia opener David Warner has pleaded guilty to a drink-driving charge after being stopped during a random breath test in Sydney in April, according to the BBC.Warner’s lawyer, Bobby Hill, confirmed that the former Australian cricketer was admitting to the charge.Warner was charged after failing a random roadside breath test in Sydney’s eastern suburbs on April 5. Police later took him to Maroubra Police Station, where he returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.104, more than double the legal limit.“The parties are in discussion about the facts,” Hill told the court.“He accepts that was a reckless decision, a foolish decision to get in his car instead of taking an Uber,” Hill said.“It’s not a crime to have a glass of wine on the day of the Lord’s resurrection. In fact, some would consider that completely appropriate,” the lawyer said.“His crime is, as I said, choosing a foolish plan A instead of a plan B,” he said.

Sentencing on August 18

Warner will be sentenced on August 18. He faces a minimum six-month driving ban, a possible fine of up to A$2,200 and a maximum prison sentence of nine months.

Another controversy for Warner

The former Australia opener has previously been involved in several high-profile controversies. In 2018, he was banned for 12 months over the ball-tampering scandal in South Africa after Cricket Australia found that he had masterminded a plan to alter the condition of the ball using sandpaper. The incident also left him permanently ineligible for national team leadership roles. In 2013, Warner was suspended after punching England batter Joe Root during an incident in Birmingham.
