Argentina vs Switzerland Live Score, HT, 1-0, FIFA World Cup 2026 Quarter Finals: Mac Allister’s first World Cup goal gives Argentina the edge

The curtain comes down on the quarter-final stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a heavyweight clash between defending champions Argentina and an unbeaten Switzerland at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. The winners will secure the final place in the semifinals, where either England or Norway await.

Argentina have reached this stage the hard way. Although Lionel Scaloni’s side comfortably progressed from Group J, their knockout campaign has tested both their character and resilience. Cape Verde pushed the reigning champions into extra time before Argentina eventually prevailed 3-2 in the Round of 32. Their Round of 16 encounter against Egypt proved even more dramatic. Trailing 2-0 until the closing stages, Argentina produced a remarkable comeback through goals from Cristian Romero, Lionel Messi and Enzo Fernández to seal a stunning 3-2 victory and continue their title defence.

Switzerland’s route has been defined by organisation and discipline. Murat Yakin’s men topped Group B before producing a composed 2-0 victory over Algeria in the Round of 32. They then delivered one of the tournament’s finest defensive displays by shutting out Colombia for 120 minutes before Gregor Kobel’s heroics and Rubén Vargas’ decisive penalty secured a 4-3 shootout victory. It is Switzerland’s first appearance in the World Cup quarter-finals since 1954.

The individual battle attracting the greatest attention is, unsurprisingly, Lionel Messi. Now 39, the Argentine captain has scored in every match during this tournament and sits level with France’s Kylian Mbappé on eight goals in the Golden Boot race. His tournament has also featured moments of adversity, including two missed penalties, but he responded by inspiring Argentina’s comeback victory against Egypt with a goal and an assist.

Switzerland enter the contest without injured midfielder Johan Manzambi, but the experienced spine of Granit Xhaka, Manuel Akanji and Gregor Kobel remains intact. Argentina, meanwhile, report no fresh injury concerns after their physically demanding victory over Egypt, allowing Scaloni to field his strongest available XI.

History strongly favours La Albiceleste. Argentina have never lost to Switzerland, recording five wins and two draws across seven previous meetings. They have also eliminated the Swiss in both previous World Cup encounters, winning 2-0 during the 1966 group stage before Ángel Di María’s extra-time winner, created by Messi, settled a tense Round of 16 contest in Brazil in 2014.

With Switzerland seeking their first World Cup semifinal in 72 years and Argentina chasing consecutive world titles, the stakes could hardly be greater. One of the tournament’s most disciplined defences now attempts to stop one of football’s greatest ever players from taking another step towards World Cup history.
