Space for Good India Challenge 2026: University students can win up to Rs 5 lakh; check details

University students across India with an interest in space technology, engineering, and innovation can turn their ideas into practical solutions through the Space for Good India Challenge 2026, launched by Viasat. The competition invites students to develop technology-driven concepts aimed at addressing real-world challenges using space and satellite technologies. This initiative intends to help the young innovators to broaden their vision regarding applications of space and satellite technology and how they may be leveraged to solve challenges in different domains such as connectivity, disaster relief efforts, digital accessibility, etc.

What is Space for Good India Challenge 2026?

Space for Good India Challenge 2026 offers the students the chance to come up with innovative ideas using space technology solutions to address challenges existing on Earth.Technical knowledge can be combined with creativity to create solutions which have real world application. The competition is open for students studying at various universities in India and is specifically suited for students interested in space, engineering, telecommunications, and technology.

What areas can students explore?

Students can propose solutions across a range of space and technology-related areas. The challenge covers themes where satellite and emerging technologies can potentially address gaps in infrastructure and access. Some of the key areas include:

  • Satellite connectivity
  • Disaster response and management
  • Internet of Things (IoT)
  • Digital access in rural and remote regions
  • Cybersecurity
  • Sustainable access to space
  • Communication and connectivity in hard-to-reach areas

The competition encourages participants to think about how space technology can be used to solve everyday challenges rather than limiting their ideas to traditional space missions.

Rs 5 lakh prize for the winner

The competition carries a substantial cash prize for the top-performing participants. The winner of the Space for Good India Challenge 2026 will receive Rs 5 lakh. The second-place winner will be awarded Rs 3.75 lakh, while the third-place winner will receive Rs 2.75 lakh.

Position Cash prize
First Rs 5 lakh
Second Rs 3.75 lakh
Third Rs 2.75 lakh

Beyond the prize money, finalists will also get an opportunity to engage with professionals working in the space and technology sector.

Mentorship and industry exposure

One of the crucial factors that should not be overlooked is the possibility of mentoring of the selected students by professionals. The finalists will be mentored by Viasat professionals who will help them develop their ideas. This might help students learn about the process through which an idea formed in an educational environment might be evaluated and perfected to become a more realistic technology solution. Thus, the competition might be seen as something more than just another student competition, providing the participants with the chance to get acquainted with the latest industry advancements.

How will the competition be conducted?

The Space for Good India Challenge 2026 will be conducted in multiple stages.First, participants will be required to submit their proposals electronically. Selected teams/participants will move on to the next stage after an initial assessment has been conducted.Finalists that have made it through the screening process will get guidance from experts from Viasat and work on improving their proposals. Finalists will then pitch their proposals to a panel of experts in the final stage. Final pitches and award ceremonies are expected to be held in October 2026.

Why the challenge matters for students

Space technologies have been expanding in terms of application beyond the usual launching and exploration of satellites. These include connectivity, remote sensing, disaster management, cybersecurity, and availability of digital services that can be delivered through space-based solutions. For college students, contests like the Space for Good India Challenge can give them a venue to test out such applications and showcase their problem-solving skills. It offers the opportunity for the students to bring the concept from a classroom exercise to something that can solve real-world problems faced by individuals or communities. For engineering, research, and technology students, the mentoring and the expertise of the judges, in addition to the industry insight, can prove to be an important learning experience.
