'Huge ask': ECB explains why Harry Brook missed out as Joe Root returns as Test captain

England’s decision to bring Joe Root back as Test captain after Ben Stokes’ retirement may have surprised many, but the England and Wales Cricket Board believes it is the right move for both the present and the future. With Harry Brook already serving as England’s white-ball captain and acting as Stokes’ deputy in the Test side, the 27-year-old had been widely tipped to inherit the red-ball leadership. Instead, the selectors opted to hand the reins back to Root, who previously captained England before Stokes took over.ECB selector Marcus North explained that while Brook is already proving himself as a leader in white-ball cricket, the board does not want to overload him by asking him to captain across all three formats.“I think Harry Brook is obviously a fantastic player for us in all formats. Incredibly important. I think his leadership in the white-ball game is maturing with every series. I think we’ve seen that through our T20 side, getting to No. 1 in the world during the summer, albeit I think we’ve slipped back to No. 2, but we’re certainly one of the best teams in the world in T20 cricket. And we have won our last two ODI series building into the World Cup,” North told Sky Sports.Brook has overseen England’s rise in white-ball cricket, with the team reaching the top of the T20I rankings during the summer before slipping to second. England have also won their last two ODI series as preparations continue for next year’s ODI World Cup.North said the ECB remains fully committed to Brook as a future Test captain but believes the timing is not right given his existing responsibilities in white-ball cricket.According to the selector, managing England in all three international formats would be a significant challenge for any player, making Root’s experience a valuable asset for the Test side at this stage.“So, you know, he’s doing a fantastic job there with an eye on the World Cup at the back end of next year, working with Brendon (McCullum). That’s a key focus, and leading in all three formats is a huge ask for any captain.”“I’ve no doubt that the time will come for Harry, but we’re very blessed that we’ve got someone like Joe (Root), who’s so experienced and is going to do such a great job this time round, with Harry and Brendon working in the white-ball space,” he added. The appointment marks Root’s second stint as England’s Test captain, with the ECB choosing experience over succession planning as they begin a new chapter following Stokes’ retirement.
