NEET UG counselling 2026: What is the difference between AIQ and state counselling?

NEET UG counselling 2026: What is the difference between AIQ and state counselling?

The Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) has opened registration for NEET UG (National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test Undergraduate) 2026 counselling. This is for admission to MBBS, BDS and Nursing courses.Students can register on the official website, mcc.nic.in, till August 12. The seat allotment result will come out on August 17.This counselling round is only for the All India Quota (AIQ), which covers 15% of seats. The remaining 85% seats are handled separately by each state.Through this AIQ round, MCC will give seats in:

 • Government medical and dental colleges (15% quota)
 • All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) – 100% seats
 • Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER)
 • Central universities like Delhi University (DU), Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU)
 • ESIC medical colleges
 • Deemed universities and other participating colleges

What about the other 85% of seats?

Those are filled through state counselling. Each state or union territory runs its own process, with its own schedule, registration steps, eligibility rules, reservation policy and merit list. This covers government and private medical/dental colleges under that state, including self-financed and NRI quota seats.

Can a student apply for both?

Yes. If a student meets the eligibility criteria for both, they can apply for AIQ counselling as well as their state’s counselling. But note — both have separate, different registration windows, so students need to apply to each one on its own portal.

What’s the difference between AIQ and state counselling?

 • Who runs it: AIQ counselling is run by MCC, under the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). State counselling is run by the respective state or union territory.
 • Eligibility: Both need a valid NEET UG score. But state counselling also requires students to meet that state’s domicile rules.
 • Reservation: For AIQ, reservation rules are set by central and participating universities. For state counselling, each state sets its own reservation policy.
 • Registration: AIQ registration happens on the MCC portal. State counselling registration happens on each state’s own portal.

What about Nursing and other courses?

Students applying for BSc (Hons) Nursing, BCSc and AH programme (under the 15% Veterinary Council of India quota), and Military Nursing Service (MNS) BSc Nursing will get seats based only on their NEET UG 2026 rank. For BAMS, BUMS, BSMS and BHMS courses, AIQ counselling will be conducted separately by the All India Ayush Central Counselling Committee (AACCC), not by MCC.
