French football is on the verge of a new chapter, with the French Football Federation (FFF) set to unveil its new men’s national team head coach on Tuesday. Former Real Madrid boss and France legend Zinedine Zidane is widely expected to succeed Didier Deschamps, whose 14-year tenure came to an end following the 2026 FIFA World Cup.The announcement will be made by FFF president Philippe Diallo during a press conference at the federation’s headquarters in Paris. Although the governing body has not officially confirmed Zidane’s appointment, the 54-year-old has emerged as the overwhelming favourite to take charge of Les Bleus.

Deschamps leaves behind a lasting legacy

Deschamps stepped down after leading France to another deep World Cup run, with Les Bleus bowing out in the semifinals before finishing fourth in the tournament. During his time in charge, Deschamps restored France’s status among international football’s elite. He guided the team to the 2018 FIFA World Cup title, the 2022 World Cup final, the UEFA Euro 2016 final, and the 2021 UEFA Nations League crown, making him one of the country’s most successful managers.

Zidane returns to management

Zidane will return to coaching for the first time since leaving Real Madrid in 2021. His managerial career at the Spanish giants was one of the most successful in modern football, highlighted by three consecutive UEFA Champions League titles between 2016 and 2018. In addition to European success, Zidane also won two La Liga titles, two UEFA Super Cups, two FIFA Club World Cups and multiple domestic honours during his two spells at the Santiago Bernabéu.The France job has long been viewed as the next logical step in Zidane’s coaching career, with speculation surrounding his appointment continuing for several years. Before establishing himself as an elite manager, Zidane enjoyed an iconic playing career with the French national team. He inspired France to its maiden FIFA World Cup triumph in 1998, scoring twice in the final against Brazil, before playing a pivotal role in the country’s UEFA Euro 2000 success. His performances earned him the 1998 Ballon d’Or, recognising him as the world’s best footballer.Zidane represented France in 108 international matches, scoring 31 goals. His final appearance came in the 2006 FIFA World Cup final against Italy, where he was sent off in extra time following the infamous incident involving Marco Materazzi.

Attention turns to nations league fixtures

France’s new coach is expected to take charge ahead of the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches. Les Bleus are scheduled to face Turkey away on September 25, followed by another away fixture against Belgium on September 28. They will then host Italy at the Stade de France on October 2.
