Kevin Keegan, one of English football’s most celebrated figures, has died at the age of 75. His family confirmed the news on Monday, revealing he had been fighting cancer since his diagnosis earlier this year. A double Ballon d’Or winner, a Liverpool great, the man who gave Newcastle its identity as “The Entertainers” — Keegan leaves behind a legacy that will take generations to fully appreciate. Alan Shearer put it simply on social media: “My Hero. My manager. My friend. Sleep easy Boss.”

How did Kevin Keegan die? What was his cause of death?

Kevin Keegan had been dealing with abdominal symptoms for some time before his family went public about his condition in January. Further medical evaluation confirmed what many feared. By June, Keegan himself disclosed that he had been diagnosed with stage four cancer, the most advanced stage, indicating the disease had spread beyond its point of origin. He passed away seven weeks after that public disclosure. A family statement confirmed he was “surrounded by his wife and daughters in his final moments.” The statement described him as “a much loved husband, father and grandfather” and requested privacy during what it called “a hugely difficult time.” His medical team received specific thanks in the announcement.

What did Kevin Keegan achieve as a player and manager?

Kevin Keegan arrived at Liverpool in 1971, signed by Bill Shankly for just £33,000 from Scunthorpe United. What followed over the next six years was the foundation of a remarkable career. He won three First Division titles, the FA Cup, two UEFA Cups, and the 1977 European Cup at Anfield. Then came Hamburg, where he won the Bundesliga and achieved something no British player had done before or since: back-to-back Ballon d’Or victories in 1978 and 1979. He remains one of only four English players to have ever won that award. At international level, Keegan scored 21 goals in 63 England appearances between 1972 and 1982. He later took the national job in February 1999, guiding England to Euro 2000. His tenure ended with a resignation following a World Cup qualifying defeat against Germany at the old Wembley. As a manager, his most impactful chapter came at Newcastle. He took the club from a relegation fight in the First Division in 1992 and turned them into Premier League contenders within four years, finishing runners-up in 1995-96. His Newcastle side played football that captivated the country. His later spells included Fulham, Manchester City (2001 to 2005), and a brief return to Newcastle in 2008.

Who was Kevin Keegan beyond football?

Away from the pitch, Keegan was genuinely famous in a way that modern footballers rarely experience. He was the face of Brut 33, released pop singles, and was a fixture of 1970s popular culture in Britain. His appeal went far beyond football fans.Newcastle United’s tribute said Keegan’s impact “will live on in the memories he created with club and country, the dreams he inspired wherever he went.” Liverpool said his “indomitable spirit and remarkable contribution will be forever etched” in the club’s history. Manchester City credited him with helping establish them as a Premier League club during his four years in charge.Current Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe even reached out to Keegan when he took the job in 2021, seeking insight into what it takes to succeed at the club.
