NEW DELHI: History will be on the line when Argentina face Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final at the New York New Jersey Stadium on Sunday.Argentina are aiming to become the first men’s team in 64 years to win back-to-back FIFA World Cup titles, after lifting the trophy in 2022.Only two nations have achieved the feat before – Italy (1934 and 1938) and Brazil (1958 and 1962).Spain, meanwhile, are chasing their second World Cup title after winning in 2010. They head into the final on an incredible 37-match unbeaten run stretching back to early 2024.Overall, Argentina have won six, drawn two and lost six matches against Spain in all competitions. Their only competitive victory came in the group stage of the 1966 FIFA World Cup, where they won 2-1.

Messi vs Spain: A story comes full circle

The final also brings together Lionel Messi and a country that played a huge role in his career. Born in Argentina, Messi spent part of his childhood and most of his club career in Spain. He was eligible to represent Spain internationally, but he always chose Argentina.Sunday’s final will be his first match against Spain since a friendly in 2010, when Argentina defeated the then world champions.The match will also reunite Messi and Spain star Lamine Yamal, who famously appeared together in a photograph when Yamal was a baby.Despite the occasion, Messi said his approach remains unchanged.“We grew up playing soccer with passion, eager to play.
