Chennai: Bringing relief to households, farmers, and businesses, the Tamil Nadu Government has confirmed that electricity tariffs will not be increased during the remainder of 2025. The government said the decision has been taken despite rising electricity procurement costs, ensuring that consumers will not face additional financial burden through higher power bills this year.
White Paper Highlights Financial Challenges
The white paper revealed that Tamil Nadu’s electricity sector is carrying a total debt of ₹2.47 lakh crore, reflecting the financial pressure faced by the state’s power utilities.
According to the minister, the document has been prepared to provide transparency about the sector’s current condition and the measures being taken to strengthen electricity infrastructure and improve service delivery.
Major Infrastructure Expansion Planned
As part of its long-term strategy to modernize the power distribution network, the government plans to procure 1.5 lakh electricity transformers over the next four years. The initiative aims to improve power distribution, reduce system failures, and meet growing electricity demand across the state.
The minister also stated that 343 people were provided employment opportunities in the electricity department during the past five years.
Focus on Renewable Energy
The state government reiterated its commitment to clean energy by stating that approvals for solar power projects have been granted through a transparent process. Officials believe expanding renewable energy capacity will help strengthen Tamil Nadu’s power supply while supporting sustainable development goals.
