Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu to attend Silver Jubilee celebrations of Basavatarakam cancer hospital tomorrow

The Silver Jubilee celebrations of Basavatarakam Hospital will be held on Monday evening at Novotel Hyderabad Convention Centre. The event, hosted under the leadership of Nandamuri Balakrishna, will be attended by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, eminent personalities from various fields, leading medical experts and philanthropists associated with the hospital’s remarkable journey.
As it marks 25 years of service, Basavatarakam Hospital stands as a shining example of how compassion, philanthropy, medical excellence and community support can come together to fight one of humanity’s toughest diseases—and give thousands of patients a second chance at life.
Twenty-five years ago, a dream was born out of compassion—to ensure that cancer would not become a death sentence for those who could not afford expensive treatment. Today, that dream has transformed into one of India’s most respected comprehensive cancer care institutions, the Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital & Research Institute, which is celebrating its Silver Jubilee. For thousands of families across Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and neighbouring states, Basavatarakam Hospital is more than a medical institution—it is a lifeline, a place where hope triumphs over despair and where humanity meets cutting-edge healthcare.
Conceived under the leadership of N. T. Rama Rao and inspired by the final wish of his wife, Basavatarakam Nandamuri, the institution was founded with a mission to make advanced cancer treatment affordable and accessible to everyone, especially the poor. The foundation for the hospital was laid in 1988 with support from medical experts, scientists, philanthropists and members of the Indian diaspora. In 2000, the hospital was inaugurated by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee as a 100-bed facility. Over the years, it has expanded into a 650-bed comprehensive cancer hospital and research institute, earning national recognition for its excellence in patient care.
Every year, the hospital treats more than three lakh outpatients and nearly 90,000 inpatients. More than 65 per cent of its patients come from economically weaker sections, underscoring its role as a people’s hospital. The institution has successfully performed over 8,000 cancer surgeries and 86 bone marrow transplants, while providing advanced treatment in surgical, medical and radiation oncology. The hospital also offers treatment under government healthcare schemes such as Ayushman Bharat-PMJAY and other public health programmes, ensuring that quality cancer care remains within the reach of underprivileged families.
What truly sets Basavatarakam hospital apart is its commitment to reaching patients beyond its walls. Through a mobile cancer screening bus equipped with digital mammography, ultrasound and digital X-ray facilities, the hospital has taken early cancer detection services to remote villages and tribal areas. The initiative has helped identify cancers at an early stage, giving countless patients a better chance at survival and recovery. The hospital also runs awareness campaigns, free medical camps and palliative care services, providing not just treatment but emotional support and dignity to patients and their families.
Under the leadership of actor and Hindupur MLA Nandamuri Balakrishna, who serves as Chairman and Managing Trustee, the hospital continues to expand its services with a spirit of compassion and selfless service. For Balakrishna, the hospital’s management is not merely an administrative responsibility but a sacred mission dedicated to serving cancer patients and fulfilling the humanitarian vision of his parents.
