New Delhi: A specialised javelin-throwing machine that was procured to sharpen India’s elite throwing edge is lying unused in the open at Jawaharlal Nehru (JLN) stadium, exposed to Delhi’s monsoon after months without installation.TOI visited the stadium premises on Tuesday afternoon and found the equipment behind the boys’ sports hostel/residential complex, wrapped in polythene, lying uninstalled and gathering dust, moisture and grime. People familiar with the matter said the machine’s procurement was approved in Jan 2026 and has remained unused since its arrival in March, with no space earmarked for its proper set-up.TOI sent a detailed questionnaire on Tuesday evening through official email channels to the sports ministry, Sports Authority of India (SAI), its director general and TOPS headquarters. The queries sought responses on procurement, cost, intended use, non-installation, and exposure to the monsoon.

Responses were also sought on what safeguards were in place for the machine’s computer, sensors and other components against rain, moisture, dust and rust, and whether any damage had been assessed. At the time of publication, responses were awaited. The story will be updated if replies are received.According to sources, the machine cost around Rs 15 lakh and was procured under the govt’s ‘Make in India’ initiative for advanced javelin-specific strength training. The sources added that a Mission Olympic Cell (MOC) proposal worth Rs 22 lakh was cleared for leading javelin thrower Sachin Yadav’s training and equipment requirements for major competitions in 2026, including the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and the Asian Games.

Wrapped in polythene, the machine has reportedly never been installed even once. There is no earmarked outdoor space, sources said, leaving the costly apparatus exposed to weather damage.The apparatus is modelled on the German Kraft Trainings Gerät (KTG), a specialised strength-training system associated with elite German throwers, including legendary Uwe Hohn. The concept uses a weighted sled to replicate the explosive upward drive required in javelin throwing, helping athletes develop sport-specific power and release speed.

The machine has a 3.8kg sled that can accommodate up to 10kg of additional weight, taking the total load to 13.8kg. Its resistance and movement are designed to enable athletes to repeatedly train the throwing action at specific release angles. The equipment also incorporates electronic components, including a computer and sensors, to provide training feedback.The technology was made famous by German throwers and was also used in China before India acquired a locally manufactured and adapted version. India became the third country to procure such a javelin-specific machine. Its acquisition was seen as another step towards building high-end indigenous sports equipment.A similar KTG-type machine had been installed at the National Institute of Sports, Patiala, ahead of the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, allowing Neeraj Chopra and other javelin throwers to train on the specialised apparatus.At JLN stadium, however, the equipment has remained outside. Sources said the lack of an earmarked installation area prevented its use, even though several elite, emerging and talented javelin throwers train at the facility. The machine, sources said, could have benefitted throwers preparing for major competitions, besides younger athletes seeking specialised strength training.
